Top CPAP Tubing Tips

CPAP mask leaks are very common and can take a toll on the quality of your therapy. You may not feel it right away but the feel of pressurized air and mask can make a difference in your energy level. Thus, it is important to have the right mask to keep your airway from collapsing. Furthermore, the problem may also lie in your CPAP tubing.

Your CPAP tubing plays a crucial role in your sleep therapy. It helps provide comfort and accuracy of your CPAP therapy delivery. If you take care of your CPAP tubing system, it’ll help prevent mask leaks. CPAP mask leaks can be a huge problem for sleep apnea patients. When air leaks out of your mask, it compromises the quality of your CPAP therapy. Mask leaks can also lead to the loss of proper pressure necessary to keep your airways open during sleep, which can cause increased fatigue the following morning.

Tubing Length

Your tubing length should be one of the factors to be considered when picking your CPAP supplies. Standard length is 6 feet long. However, there are manufacturers that offer 4-foot, 8-foot, and 10-foot CPAP tubing. This would depend on where you place your CPAP when you’re sleeping. Is it on your bedside table? Is it placed directly beside you?

In addition, note that the longer your CPAP tubing system is, the farther the distance air has to travel from the heated humidifier to your mask. Keep in mind that the temperature will drop as the air travels through your tubing, resulting in loss in moisture. This can also lead to rainout.

Tubing Diameter

The standard CPAP tubing's inside diameter is 19mm. On the other hand, a thin tubing will have an inside diameter of 15mm. When switching between different types of tubing, which is, in fact, allowed, you have to also change the settings on your CPAP machine so that you’ll be able to make the most out of your CPAP therapy.
